Murray:
Do you have other Apple devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac)?
If so, what I do is turn on the option to share notes via iCloud.
Then they all are synced through iCloud and appear on my iPad and my Mac.

I've used the method that Jim described for several years and have never lost any Notes.
