Thanks that was very helpful. I never knew how to do this until now.
Now hopefully I shall have my backups on iCloud, specially important for me as I can't back up to my computer.
So thanks again.
I am however planning to buy the latest MacBook which will mean an automatic deletion of the iPhoto ap and I shall have to learn to use PHOTOS. However as it will have the latest os and latest iTunes versions all sync and backup issues will be a thing of the past.

(And on a now obsolete AirPort Time Capsule for automatic back-ups of my Macs.) But most of my data are in some cloud anyway.

How exactly do you back up your iPhone xs to the iCloud. Sorry to sound so foolish but I'd really appreciate a step by step direction.

I do an encrypted backup of my iPhone XS Max using iTunes to iCloud all the time. I do it mainly when there is an update to iOS. I also use iTunes to backup to my computer. I am running 12.1 Beta which is updated almost weekly and needs a backup to iCloud. I do have automatic backup turned on in iOS also.

The same happens on all my devices. The sync to the MacBook however allows each of my 26,000 photographs to appear on my phones. This is still possible with iOS 11 which runs on my iPhone 7. However the new XS max doesn't sync with iTunes and calls for an upgrade in the Mac OS which I'm unwilling to go for as the super user-friendly photo management ap iPhoto will cease to run and I'll be forced to use the ap Photos which has replaced it.
