[apple-iphone] Question about open vpn

 

I have an iPad Pro and an iPhone X. I started using protonvpn through the open vpn app because they don't have a dedicated app yet. On the iPad, when I connect and after the iPad is idle it reconnects to the vpn reliably when I start the iPad. Even overnight it reconnects when I open the iPad.
The iPhone X on the other hand doesn't consistently connect, drops connections frequently and in general doesn't perform. I also sent feedback to Apple that the hidden "vpn" connection icon should be placed In the always visible upper right hand corner where control center is invoked to quickly detect when the vpn disconnects. Now I have to keep checking to be sure I am connected when I on public WiFi.

Does anyone know if there is a setting somewhere or if this has been a problem with the X?
I checked the settings on the iPad as well as the X and both seem to be the same.
