So it's always been wrong, regardless of iOS version?

The problem is long-standing Otto. It has come back to my mind with darker nights when I use astronomy apps (which depend on the compass for direction).
Thanks to all who responded. I think it is this app in this phone which is faulty - here's why I think that.
I restarted the phone after reading Otto's reply, and went down my garden well away from buildings, power sources etc. On calibration, the compass immediately indicated true north (with my hobbies, you know exactly the cardinal compass points in your own garden!) When I walked around, it abruptly swung 90 degrees to indicate east as true north, and stayed there. After a while it drifted about - as I swung east-west (i.e. following the sun direction), the needle moved AHEAD of me, not back. This compass app in this device is useless.
Thanks to those who replied

Have you tried the highest rated email app?
With 4.5 stars in iTunes, the Yahoo Mail app is the highest rated email app on the market. What are you waiting for? Now you can access all your inboxes (Gmail, Outlook, AOL and more) in one place. Never delete an email again with 1000GB of free cloud storage.
