I have to confess that I am a regular dropper of my phone. Sometimes it is just a foot or two; othertimes I have dropped my phone down the stairs (call me cluztzy). All of this said, a small footprint case that is designed to absorb shock coupled with a very good screen protector is excellent insurance against cracked glass and a broken phone.
You might want to consider one of these cases - they are slim but protective.
