Re: [apple-iphone] OtterBox Defender for 5c - anything better?

I used to work around heavy equipment and at the remote job sites. The average lift for a wind turbine component is 40 metric ton and up. The gravel they lay down during construction will bust a screen in a second, and I used to have to crawl around the equipment to inspect it. I have yet to have damaged an cellphone. I have even dropped my iPhone facedown on the extruded aluminum steps into the construction trailers and the tiny lip saved the screen.

I like the mophie line of cases, with the built-in batteries and no screen protection. I still have to clean off the screen and lens. And if I were to drop the iPhone while up tower, no case would protect it. When I go out fishing, I put my iPhone and wallet in a small water-proof bag with a float inside.

I think a lot of these extreme cases are a lot of hype. They certainly would not protect my iPhone if it were dropped 230 plus feet from a wind turbine, or run over by a 70 plus ton crawler crane. And when I am out on the boat fishing, I don't want to be called anyway.

To me, a lot of these extreme cases are like a  Humvee that never see a dirt road, or the one I see in the French Quarter, where you have to park half on the sidewalk so other cars can pass. That gold monster has to be parked against the building so cars can barely pass and pedestrians have to walk in the street to get around it.

The screen cover lets lots of dirt in. I have to take it off and clean dirt on inside of it a few times a month. The front camera gets very dirty and grimy have to take apart screen protector and clean all the time.

The hard shell is so thick it makes the home button and silence slider hard to press, it is deeply recessed.

The rubber that surrounds the hard shell does not stay on so well always slipping off. The rubber used to press home button and which folds out to plug in lightning connector the home button part does not stay on well, hangs loose.

My daughter's iPad Mini has an OtterBox that is insanely well designed hard shell I love it. So I am hoping the OtterBox defender for phone is as good. But reviews made me nervous I don't know if they are being super picky or just not as good a design as the mini one so I was looking for feedback here.

Well, tell us what you like and dislike about the Survivor, or expect another mixed bag of reviews. We all have different priorities in what we want.

The reviews are mixed. I currently use a Griffin Survivor and I hate
it for many many many reasons and I am looking for a super tough
protective case.
