Re: [apple-iphone] OtterBox Defender for 5c - anything better?

I agree it is funny to see a slimmer lighter phone stuffed into a huge case.

Most of the extreme cases add a huge amount to the phone's size, with few added features. The cases that I have chosen for the iPhone double the battery power, weight, and thickness, but do not add much to the width or height. And, they still fit nicely into the pocket of a shirt or pair of pants.

On rare occasions, I do use a nice slim case without an extra battery, but that is very rare for me. And these are either leather or rubberized to give additional grip. If the case has a better grip, the frequency of drops is greatly reduced.

Maybe the manufacturers should sacrifice a little weight for a more ruggedized and grip-able phones and we would not need to put them in cases. While shiny glass front and back with beveled glass edges is very pretty, it is not practical for most people. Maybe a raised edge around the front display and a textured surface for the rest would be a better design for the most of us.

I only dropped my Motorola StarTac because the antenna kept catching on the seatbelt and would get pulled from my holster. My Palm Treos had the same problem, with the addition of being dropped because of the slick surface of the phone. I put my iPhones in either a leather or silicone covered case and and almost never dropped them. All have gone into the same style black ballistic nylon case.

Tongue in cheek, I will ask if you want us to have stayed with the lug-ables (about the size of an ammo box) or the first Motorola, (the white slimmed down WW II walkie talkie)? Where is my man-bag, so I can take my Motorola with me? ;0)

Use what ever suits your needs best.

On top of all that, does no one else find it amusing that manufacturers spend millions of dollars developing ever slimmer and lighter phones that will fit in any pocket, only to see most of them put inside huge cases that often fit in no pocket at all?

I used to work around heavy equipment and at the remote job sites. The average lift for a wind turbine component is 40 metric ton and up. The gravel they lay down during construction will bust a screen in a second, and I used to have to crawl around the equipment to inspect it. I have yet to have damaged an cellphone. I have even dropped my iPhone facedown on the extruded aluminum steps into the construction trailers and the tiny lip saved the screen.

I like the mophie line of cases, with the built-in batteries and no screen protection. I still have to clean off the screen and lens. And if I were to drop the iPhone while up tower, no case would protect it. When I go out fishing, I put my iPhone and wallet in a small water-proof bag with a float inside.

I think a lot of these extreme cases are a lot of hype. They certainly would not protect my iPhone if it were dropped 230 plus feet from a wind turbine, or run over by a 70 plus ton crawler crane. And when I am out on the boat fishing, I don't want to be called anyway.

To me, a lot of these extreme cases are like a  Humvee that never see a dirt road, or the one I see in the French Quarter, where you have to park half on the sidewalk so other cars can pass. That gold monster has to be parked against the building so cars can barely pass and pedestrians have to walk in the street to get around it.
