Some people have been having problems with contacts that are synced to iCloud. If you are using iCloud to sync your contacts one solution is to go to Settings -> iCloud and turn Contacts off and select "Keep Contacts on iPhone". Then turn the iCloud contacts back on and they can come back.
There could be other issues going on and it would be helpful to know how your contacts are synced.

I am hoping someone can please help me. Have an iPhone 4S with AT&T...got up this morning...all of my contacts are gone...did a hard reset and a sync...still nothing...however, when I call up my phone and look at favorites or recents, there are SOME numbers...but not under contacts from the phone screen. Any ideas?
