A pouch might work for him but anytime it is removed that is the risk for dropping cases like OtterBox Armor the phone can be used without removing which would be ideal.

Instead of a case with lanyard, would it work to have a small pouch to put the phone in with case on it and have the pouch attached to a lanyard? You would still have the phone on a lanyard around your neck. I use Maxpedition pouches for other things and they are very tough and well made. I looked on Amazon and found a Maxpedition mini pocket pouch that is 4"x6", black and has a loop at the top perfect for a lanyard.
