You got it! Yours is the only solution that works on my MacBook Air and it does just what I want. Option+Command+"+" zooms in and Option+Command+"-" zooms back out. Seems to work in all applications. I have had no success with trackpad gestures but the keyboard options above meet my need better. With the trackpad I can move the zoomed section on the screen. The amount of zoom appears to be adjustable in Preferences, Accessibility. All this on my 2011 MacBook Air running 10.8.5. Thank you, Mary, and thanks to all others who posted.
