[apple-iphone] Whatsapp on iPhone 3G

hi

apple recently allowed users to download the legacy version of their apps for older iOS versions. my cousin has an iPhone 3G which runs iOS 4.2.1 and he downloaded Whatsapp on his phone which is compatible with 4.2.1

however the app itself suggests that he should update the app version, and doesn't allow him to connect to the servers.

now the policy announcement allows users to download older versions of the app, but does not ensure that the app will run in the current environment. can anything be done?
