On your concern, it's easy to place the SIM in the iPhone. You're gonna need the eject tool that comes with your phone. If you lost it, a non-insulated paper clip would do. You poke that tiny hole on the SIM tray. For 3GS, it's on top. Replace the SIM.
However, your phone must be network unlocked for it to work with other networks.
