Hi!
In the last week, both the Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth in my iPhone 4 (iOS 6.1.3) has started suffering extreme range degradation. The Wi-Fi is down to less than 10 feet from an access point and won't find any access points unless I am standing right next to them. The Bluetooth connection drops if I get more than about a two feet away from the other device. In the past, I have easily been able to get 20 to 30 feet between the devices before obvious packet loss.
I think there are three possible causes:
1) I added an Exchange email account for the server at my new job. About a day later they appear to have pushed a profile to my phone. For example, now I cannot turn off Passcode Lock and Settings -> General -> Profiles has disappeared.
2) iOS is confused and I need to reset the phone. (See below)
3) The Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip is dying or something has gone wrong with the 2.4Ghz antenna.
When I go Wi-Fi, the little spinner next to choose a network will spin for about two seconds and then no networks appear. I know I am in range of at least a dozen networks. As I said above, if I am standing next to an access point, I will see it only.
On the Bluetooth, I was doing streaming music in my car the other night (hopefully low interference zone) with the iPhone about 18 inches from the headphones and on the same side of the headphones where the radio/antenna appear to be. The packet loss was so severe I had to stop listening.
I have tried:
a) Turn Wi-Fi off, wait a couple of minutes, turn it back on
b) Same as (a) but hard reset (Power+Home) between.
c) Hard reset with Wi-Fi on
d) Turn airplane mode on, wait a couple of minutes, turn it off, then turn Wi-Fi back on
e) Same as (d) but with a hard reset between
f) Normal power down (Power then swipe) power up sequence
g) General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings
None of the above has fixed the problem and I am running out of ideas.
I think my next step is a wipe and restore but I have never done that. I've found a number of discussions about how to do that, but I'd really like a confirmation of the steps from someone here in the group.
Can someone list out the proper steps for a backup / wipe / restore so that I lose as little as possible?
Thanks for your help!
