Pat has mentioned iCloud, and this is popular with Mac + iPhone users because content is automatically synced across devices: change something on one and the changes also happen on the other(s). I do this with Notes, Numbers spreadsheets, and Pages documents. iCloud is not limited to Mac users.
I back up my iPhone weekly using iTunes on my MacBook Pro, which is also how I get music and photos (taken on another camera) onto the phone. iTunes does not back up/copy photos from the phone, though: for that I use the Apple Photos app. The MacBook is backed up daily/weekly, etc., over Wi-Fi to our NAS. Many use external drives for this you need to use a cable, fine for a desktop computer but much less convenient for a notebook/laptop.
If you don't have a Mac then I'm sure others can chip in with their suggestions.

Hi all:I have read many of these posts, but what this 82-year old geezer really needs is a simple, step by step explanation of how I can save (back up, I guess) my Notes (some are very important) and my photos, and my contacts. My main worry are the Notes. My wife had her purse stolen recently with her iPhone in it, and she is feeling the pain.Is there a simple way of doing this, without having to visit the iPhone store (and I may have to try that)? Thanks for any and all suggestions.
