Backups, backups, backups!
Whatever else you do, keep at least 2 backups on devices (NAS, external drive, other computer) you own and can access whenever you need them.

The OP wants to store them on a device they control, not on someone else's server, and to each their own decision.Besides that many if these storage services have you give up the rights to the images, there is one other possible problem.Years ago, there was a storage service based in, I believe, southeast Canada, that I had used as a primary place to store digital images. I don't remember the name. But one night, they folded their tent and stole off into the night. No warning, no indication, they just vanished. One one list I was on, a member happened to live by their location, and so they went by a day or two later. They looked in the windows and saw evidence of a hasty removal of the servers and other expensive hardware and the rest in shambles. There was a note on the entrance saying good bye. They fled in the middle of the night to avoid creditors, taking the servers and photos with them, never to be seen again. The images for hundreds of thousands of user were gone in the blink of an eye.
