The OP wants to store them on a device they control, not on someone else's server, and to each their own decision.
With regard to this: All of my photos on ONLY on my equipment, generally with 1 or more backups.
And NONE of them are "in" an app (e.g., Photos, iPhoto, Aperture, Pixelmator, Photoshop, whatever.
I copy them to my hard drive from my iPhone or my Nikon (actually from the microXD card), then immediately back them up.
THEN, and only then, will I process any of the images in one or another piece of software.
