Welcome, Tom!
http://www.nhl.com/ loads quickly and completely here. I'll guess that your second link was supposed to be http://sabres.nhl.com/ (but that also loads here in Safari on OS X).
You say it's a new MacBook, but is it factory new or used and new to you? When you use your iPad, is it on the same network as your MacBook, like home Wi-Fi? Or is it connecting via cellular wireless (Verizon, AT&T, etc.)?
On the MacBook, go to Applications/Utilities/ and run Terminal. Wait a second for your prompt to come up, then type this and hit Return:
traceroute www.nhl.com
Let us know what you get (skip the first couple of lines with your own IP address). I get a relatively short 7-hop path to nhl.com here.

It looks like the NHL website is served by Akamai, so there really shouldn't be any problem reaching it. This is a weird one.

The funny thing is that I can get both on my IPad using Safari. I am new to Apple having started with the Atari 400 and ended by getting mad at Windows 10 and Dell, so please be gentle.
