Consult your cell phone provider on data plans while roaming. Also ask about wifi connections and any data limits while in Canada. This will give you the "extra cost threshold". Also ask to get estimates on regular cell calls and limits.
Then read a chapter or a few pages of the book on his iPhone over the internet in your local area. Also, use the settings to disable any cellular data features if your cell provider has limits.
Others will have to answer the question of whether the book can be stored locally on the phone and how to store and possibly how to remove when travel is complete.
Lastly, you can buy a hard copy....:-). Hard copies never say "no". They always say "how may I be of assistance as you wander the world"...:-)

Subject: [apple-iphone] reading books when traveling...
If I download a book either to my iphone kindle or ibooks app, can I actually read the book if am traveling thru Canada or will it get me in trouble with being on the internet in Canada? I haven't been able to get a straight answer to this questions. I'd like to get a book for my husband and he wants to know if he listens to it on a trip thru Canada if that will be a problem?
