I have my email address of UK and am currently travelling in South Asia.
If I use iMessage or FaceTime where I am addressable by my email address, these apps send SMS to server in UK. The local service provider, who is selected as roaming partner by default, charges exorbitant amount for international SMS.

Go to settings. Messages under there. Turn the switch off under there. Not a bad idea if you have unlimited texting, as iMessage will use your data. I, for example, have free texting within the US, but not to foreign places. So I turn it off for domestic messages, on for foreign.
