I went to visit my server (Verizon) I was told that using my iPhone in Europe could be very expensive even with their plan for over seas. However, the salesman told me what he does. He uses his iPad to send and receive text messages with little to no cost. So, I think I will do that.
I do wish using our iPhones when we travel would be less complicated, not to mention more reasonably cost.
I just yesterday saw a current article explaining that a new law/ruling in effect as of 2/11/2015 requires carriers to unlock phones on demand by the user – IF the phone is paid off or otherwise contract-free.
Depending on the model of the iPhone, this can allow you to get a pre-paid SIM card from an overseas carrier, and use the device normally there.
The problem arrises with some older iPhones that are not "universal", but rather came in different models for different carriers. The first Verizon iPhones, for example! Didn't even have a SIM card slot in them.
If I can find my copy of the article, I will reply to this thread with the URL.
