Good, point, normally to swap SIM cards, the phone needs to be unlocked.
The OP's iPhone 5 might be old enough to fulfill her commitment that it could be unlocked. Again the OP would have to check with her provider, because only her provider can unlock it and under which circumstances they will do that have changed over the years.

You don't have to get the card in the US, but should be able to pick one up after you arrive. Then call your provider and ask them what options they offer, as each has different plans. And how to turn off the CDMA or PCS, if you have one of those phones.Years ago, you could find pay-as-you-go SIM card easily in London. I would assume you can find them easily in any major city in most of Europe now, maybe even in the destination airport. Just ask if they cover the countries you will be traveling in.

Has anyone here used their phone in Europe?
What are the do's and don'ts?
Are there inexpensive options ?
Thank-you in advance for any advice on your experiences.
