There is another method. You can get a SIM card from Mobal <http://www.mobal.com/?utm_nooverride=1&gclid=CIL_ue-T2MMCFehj7Aody0cA2w> and try it here first. The cost depends on where you are going, but it can be especially useful/efficient if you are going to be visiting more than one foreign country. Mobal is an English company. While you are assigned a permanent telephone number, you are only charged when you actually use the card/phone to make and receive calls. I am not sure how they charge for text and data.

I went to visit my server (Verizon) I was told that using my iphone in Europe could be very expensive even with their plan for over seas. However, the salesman told me what he does. He uses his ipad to send and receive text messages with little to no cost. So, I think I will do that.
I can imagine many ways your iphone would be handy for you to use during trips!
I do wish using our iphones when we travel would be less complicated, not to mention more reasonably cost.
