My experience in England was the same as Jay's, good and cheap. I kept pocket dialing on a "candy-bar" phone and didn't mind because it was so cheap. That was 2002, and I did not have anyone that I had to talk to at home, and a break from the internet and emails was nice.
It sounds like you did not talk to the right Vz rep. You got the answer I expected, but not the full picture. Ask for their rates for comparison. Then go on line and search for the carrier in the country or countries that you will visit, and check their rates and plans.
The Vz iPhone 5 should have the SIM slot, but is it unlocked. I think that changed with the iPhone 4. That is what you should ask the Vz rep. And yeah their plan will be expensive, they have probably made deals for most European countries, including ones you are not visiting and bundled them together, and then added their margin on top of that.
If you plan on calling home to the States just to chat, expect to pay an arm and two legs. If you plan to call locally for hotel or restaurant reservations and info, then it is cheap. If you need to call home for an emergency, then use a pay phone or use your hotel phone, or VOIP. That will be cheaper than using your cell phone.
If you want to use the internet, use WiFi or cellular data (checking the rates before hand, of course). If you can't live without chatting your best bud everyday, all day, then take him or her along... or take a vacation. Besides, you will be about 9 hours ahead of home, I would not want to be awakened just to chat.
And whoever said the phone number of the SIM card will be different is correct, so don't expect too many incoming calls.

Peg,It is only expensive if you use Verizon's service plans. If you get a local carrier overseas it is actually much cheaper than in the US.While the iPad is useful, it isn't as convenient if you want GPS directions or transit directions to use the subway or bus to get around in a city.Try to get a local SIM card and try out. You would have to do the same thing with your iPad or rely upon hotel wireless connections.Jay
Sent from my iPadThank-you Sandy, Brent, Alvin and Jay for your responses.
I went to visit my server (Verizon) I was told that using my iphone in Europe could be very expensive even with their plan for over seas. However, the salesman told me what he does. He uses his ipad to send and receive text messages with little to no cost. So, I think I will do that.
I can imagine many ways your iphone would be handy for you to use during trips!
I do wish using our iphones when we travel would be less complicated, not to mention more reasonably cost.
Thanks, Peg
