Re: [apple-iphone] converting windows video to iPhone video

I don't find that to be the case. Some are too large to transfer to iPhone.

I used Handbrake to convert Movies to a size and format that can be synced to an iPhone or iPod.

I've never tried it with WMV but I'd try Handbrake first. It's free and can convert to/from many formats/codecs.

Re: [apple-iphone] deleting message/mailboxes on 4s

To delete all email in a mailbox:
- open mailbox
- edit
- mark all
- trash

I don't know how to delete mailbox on an iPhone

Re: [apple-iphone] Safari Jumps to App Store

I have the same problem on an iphone 5 at both ios 7 and ios 8 with one particular site. I think the site has links to apps as ads. At home with my wifi I have an adblocker, but when I am out using cellular data, where the adblocker doesn't work, I get that situation on that one site, popping over to the app store. It has to be some nefarious ad on the sites we are visiting.

Anyone know how to block ads while on cellular data? I do have it on my home wifi, and can set it up for any other wifi I want to connect to on a regular basis.

Pabtra,

that is why our moderator, Brent, suggested checking to see if the location services are on. I will now ask you to check further, when you are using the navigation app, does the arrow in the Location Service "page" turn purple? Sadly you have to switch to that Location Service "page" so see if it is purple. It only appears in the Menu Bar as black. (Feedback to Apple.)

Again, what app are you using to view the fixed image of the map?

I assume you were using your iPhone 4 at home, where you had cellular data, and you did not have to download or cache the maps. So that is not a good comparison. You are using different stuff here.

The iPhone should have a GPS antenna, and related software to convert the info to useable data for a navigation app, but if you are not viewing the downloaded map, then the software can not superimpose your location onto the map.

So, once again, what app are you using to view the fixed image of the map?

If you are using a navigation app to view the map while moving, then the GPS is possibly defective in your iPhone 6. Unless the arrow turned purple.

the other Brent

Is it the iPad or the iPhone, or both, that you feel act like they have no GPS?

Re: [apple-iphone] Is iPhone 6 without GPS Chip?

I learned something, today. As explained by Pabitra, below, GoogleMaps and Map.app do cache   some map information for a bit. I could not make heads or tails of what Jim S. was trying to say. I have no reason to run around with cellular data turned off, but I have experienced areas where there was no cellular signal.

That was why I repeatedly asked what Pabitra was using to view the map.

Sadly, that brings me to the conclusion that the GPS function in Pabitra's iPhone 6 is not working.

I ran a simple experiment on my iPhone 4S. I put it in Airplane mode and then opened Map.app. At first it gave me a grid, but no map, so I turned off Airplane mode and opened Map.app and allowed it to download a map. It had a destination of about 10 miles to my east marked with a red pin. I then turned Airplane mode back on, and in Map.app moved around, then move out and found about a 6 square mile map with a grid around that, including the destination from the last search. Interesting that my current location was not centered in the drawn area. It retained my location and the destination markers, even after losing the local map it had cached.

I also experienced a brief period, where the GPS could not locate my iPhone, but it found it and retained it from there on.

Both Apple map as well Google maps can down load the map and keep it as long as you are in the area covered by the map. Only when you move out or expand the scale that they seek more data and need for data connection arises.

This is by personal experience.

Some Apps supply all their maps within the app file itself (e.g., TomTom).

Some Apps can download maps while connected and cache them for later use (e.g., MotionX).

ALL of the rest of the mapping Apps, INCLUDING both Google Maps and Apple Maps, download maps as needed, if they have connectivity when they need it.

Re: [apple-iphone] Is iPhone 6 without GPS Chip?

Very true, and I am very aware that some can download or cache maps, but most don't. But the OP said he/she (excuse me for not knowing the correct gender) was using GoogleMap and Apple's Map.app.

Which DO download maps, but not cache them, which was the point I was making.
