In iTunes you can edit the name, it is just a label, nothing else.
Not sure if the backup is name based, if so, backup before and after the name change to be safe

I just bought an iPhone 5 from the Apple store and I don't like the name they assigned it in setting up. I think I know how to change it, but I just want to make sure.

The problem is I have already entered it into iTunes with the current name. If I give it a new name, will the whole process start over?...or... Can I just tell it to back up whats currently there then install the backup? Will it stay the same?
