You can have both, a camera and a chime. They are not mutually exclusive. From the limited info given in the OP, I was just giving a option.
For example, if you track incoming UPS packages, you can get the same info, in near realtime. Duplication, and the relief UPS driver does not have to know he is being watched.
And yes, real time notices would be ideal.

I do not have a survallience system, but I have several IP cameras. The individual firmware sends the email. This way I have not only a live feed but an offsite still photo.
My UPS man liked the setup so much, he did the same at his house. When he delivers a package to me, he holds it up for the camera to see what/where it is from for me. It also keeps the young babysitter from bringing friends over.
