If you want push gmail in the mail app you have toset it up as an Exchange
account which is a battery drainer - I just gave it up when Google added
CardDav support.

Another solution is to just use a free iCloud account and set gmail to
forward those emails you want pushed to the iCloud address - this is what I
do as Apple's native push support uses very little battery.

As with most things there is no "perfect" solution - maybe try uninstall
and reinstall the gmail app. I tried using it but the native mail app
works better for me
