I actually need the notification when I am not at home. I live in a rural area with 45+ min response times from law enforcement. Plenty of family can be there in less than a minute.
I do not have a survallience system, but I have several IP cameras. The individual firmware sends the email. This way I have not only a live feed but an offsite still photo.
My UPS man liked the setup so much, he did the same at his house. When he delivers a package to me, he holds it up for the camera to see what/where it is from for me. It also keeps the young babysitter from bringing friends over.
