Re: [apple-iphone] Japan

Japan is one of the few countries that does not use GSM. Your AT&T iPhones will not work in Japan. If you had a Verizon iPhone, with CDMA, it might work. But since you have GSM iPhones you don't have to worry about unlocking the iPhone.

A quick web search of which transmission type is used in Japan would have told you. I knew that Japan is one of the few countries besides the US that uses CDMA, but I figured that someone with experience might answer.

AT&T might have a program and they might rent you a CDMA cellphone, but you can probably find a better deal online. And take one of your iPhone for the other features. I have no clue as to the availability of WiFi in Japan. Another good question for a web search.

Check with AT&T. I did when I went to England. The phone service was pricey but I didn't need to make phone calls really. And the data plan was pretty reasonable, and that I used.
