Be sure things that drain the battery unnecessarily are turned off if you aren't using them - bluetooth, wifi, cell connection, personal hotspot - and don't keep the screen excessively bright.
I have 6.1.3 and haven't noticed unusual battery drain, but I carry a battery pack and car and mains chargers, just in case.
You could charge it to 100% and measure the time it takes to go to zero. Apple says nine hours, I think. If you're getting only 5 or 6, something's amiss.
