I've sold previous iPhones from AT&T that were off contract. The key is to follow Jim's directions. I always set it up as a new iPhone when selling it.

1. Tell ATT to discontinue your account.
2. Settings -- General -- Erase All Content and Settings.
3. Remove and destroy the SIM card.
These 3 are not alternatives -- do ALL of them.
