It appears that the G's are the confusion. The 2G is the data plan and is 2 GB of data per month before overage charges. The 3G is wireless third generation, could also show an E for edge which is second generation wireless data speeds depending on the tower you are on. Sprints web site shows no plans where the data speed comes into plan, just data usage.
You can check your usage on the iPhone
Settings -> General -> Usage -> Cellular Usage (you can reset it as well to check usage for the billing cycle)

Settings -> General ->Cellular Data (can turn off data from the cellular network, you won't see the 3G with it off)

You mean to say you get charged extra for using 3G?
