Phyllis, It makes WiFi more secure by encripting all information to and
from your device. One additional benifit of a VPN is that it wil let you
access sites that are blocked by the provider of the WiFi. I often stay at
a hotel that blocks Facebook. A VPN lets me check FB using their WiFi.
