Re: [apple-iphone] Re: Transferring Voice Memos

It turns out that I didn't have any saved Voice Memos anywhere so I had to create one.

First problem: playing it back on the iPhone, it was barely audible. Turns out this wasn't a mic volume problem but a Voice Memos "speaker" setting. In Voice Memos there's a speaker icon at top right. If this is white, it means minimal volume, regardless of the "global" volume control. It needs to be blue. Click on the icon and there are options for Speaker, iPhone, and any AirPlay devices you might have. Mine was set to iPhone, whatever that means. I changed it to Speaker, the icon became blue, and the volume was normal again.

In iTunes, with the phone connected, I clicked iPhone > Music > Sync Music > Include voice memos and then synced as usual. The voice memo appeared under Music > Voice Memos (a built-in playlist). Get Info > Options > media kind said Voice Memo.

I copied the file to my Desktop and renamed it to avoid confusion. I dragged the copy into iTunes > Voice Memos and it showed up in there. Get Info > Options > media kind, however, said Music, *not* Voice Memo.

I again synced the phone. The memo copy was copied to the phone, but to Music, not Voice Memos. (You would expect this from the media kind.)

In iTunes > iPhone > Music, I selected Playlists > Voice Memos (not previously selected) and again synced. This time the copy *did* go into Voice Memos on the phone. So, it appears that media kind is ignored when syncing the Voice Memos playlist.

Another thing to try! I deleted the copy from iTunes and dragged it back in from the Desktop, this time into the Songs window. It imported, but did not appear in the Voice Memos playlist. I changed the media kind to Voice Memo in Get Info > Options. The file still did not show in the Voice Memos playlist and did *not* sync as either music or voice memo.

I then changed Details > Genre to Voice Memo. It still didn't show in the Voice Memos playlist and still wouldn't sync.

It seems that dragging the file into the Voice Memos playlist, and ensuring that iPhone > Music > Playlists > Voice Memos is selected is the only way that works. Normally changing the media kind is all you need to get files to be treated correctly, but not in this case!

I hope I've given you some things to try.
