My transportation situation is similar to yours and Apple support has always been willing to handle device repairs via mail after I've explained my circumstance to them. I'm given the option of being without my device while the process proceeds or allowing Apple to put a hold on my bank account for the value of the device if I want them to send me the new unit before I return the problematic one.

Just talked to AppleCare and the only option they gave me is to take it to the Apple Store, 100 miles round trip.
We did check settings, including made sure the switch was in the proper position and did reset all settings..
At 84 with no car that is a problem.
