I don't think that's weird. I like that it shows what I have on my iOS devices. Preview has been able to read PDF's for quite sometime. There is a Kindle app for the Mac but as far as I know, no iBook for Mac.
My install of iTunes 11 went very well. I like the look and the new features. It looks cleaner without the sidebar open. Everything I need is across the too bar. Only thing I really have to get use to is the button for the mini player bing in the upper right corner instead of using the green button in the upper left corner.

In the playlist list, it has the books and PDFs that are on my iPhone and iPad and the books that are on them as well along with my music playlists.
I haven't checked to see ifI can read these books or PDFs... OK, the PDF's open either Preview or Acrobat. The books that are on there won't open, the dialogue that comes-up is that this will play on my iOS device.
