I don't have a mini ( like Bill, maybe when retina comes to it) but I love my iPad 2 and now 4. It is great for comfortable reading as compared to a vertical screen laptop. It also replaces most of what a laptop can do, so for travel, it is very convenient. In addition, it is a very reliable machine unlike some ultra books. For sure it is not a NEED but is very helpful as an aid if you can justify the price.
The new Galaxies and nexuses ( nexi?) look interesting as well if someone doesn't have a lot invested in apple apps.
