Re: [apple-iphone] iTunes Alternative
It can also transfer music from iDevice to computer, but only in limited number until you pay.

I ran across this alternative to iTunes and was intrigued. Is anyone using this? How does it stack up against iTunes? I'm not having any issues with iTunes but I'm always curious about new and different ways to accomplish tasks.

What if you buy the phone from outside or pay full price? Someone I think
had shared straight talk. Check that. I've no idea but you can check.

you don't say what cell company but ATT and Verizon do not allow an iPhone without a data plan. If you put your sim in the iPhone you will shortly receive a text announcing that they have added a data plan to the phone.

[apple-iphone] Switching from Nokia to iPhone 4
Group,
I apologize if this has been asked before. I just want to make sure.
My wife was given a iPhone 4 and wants to switch her Nokia flip phone to
it. How do we do this? I'm told the SIM card is bigger in the Nokia than
the iPhone.
Also, she doesn't want the internet on the iPhone so we don't need a data
plan. Is this possible?
Your advise is appreciated in advance.

[MacBook] MacBook Pro 13" & External Display stonewalled me
I'm just getting acquainted with my MBP late 2009, Sno Lep, and have tried for a full week now to get an external display to power up via the miniport/adapter to VGA display(s). I believe I've tried every 'fix' anyone on the myriad forums suggested and still do not get a live screen. I wasn't yet able to get through a call to the nearest Apple store (50 miles away). I've pretty much shed the Windows OS mentality, but am stymied by the external display issue.
Both external displays work with other (Dell) computers. Everything seems okay with the Mac, I've tried every conceivable resolution setting, mirror/no mirror, etc. I suppose the new adapter could be defective but have no way to check that (as far as I know). Yes, I used an external keyboard and mouse also when trying to connect the display. Portability will be great when I need it in the field, but for now I prefer the comfort-style external keyboard since I've spent a few decades on ergo boards and the Mac keyboard is like tap-dancing on a pinhead.
Is there a way to check the integrity of the adapter? I'm no tech but up till now have always been able to diagnose and solve my own computer issues (including the dying motherboards on both Dells).

Re: [apple-iphone] fast battery discharge on home Wi-Fi
Thanks for the thoughts, Patrick. I did a complete reset of the router, and
that seems to have helped. I am just under a year away from an upgrade, so
I am hoping to make it that long without having to do the DFU stuff.
Thanks,
Ken

Wow this is an odd one. I did a lot of repairs for a big company a while
back and 1 out of every 100 iPhone 4 would have an odd wifi glitch where the
wifi tab was greyed out. I never did figure that one out. From what you
described, you selecting the settings app and it stalls, I'm starting to
think something has gotten corrupted. I'm not a super iphone user when it
comes to backing up and software stuff, but if there is a way to back up
some stuff, numbers, texts, SMS stuff like that, I wonder if it would be
helpful to fully wipe, put it in DFU mode, and re-install the IOS back on
the phone, then instead of restoring your settings, start to set it up from
scratch. It's an option I wouldn't want to do but I'm out of ideas. I know
you did a reset and restore but perhaps the problem was restored from the
back up.
Short of having the device replaced this I think this is one of those rare
issues that might require a replacement device.

IF you have already set up "Find My iPhone" on the unit, before it was lost or stolen, you go to Find My iPhone on another iDevice, or on iCloud, log in, and it will show a maps with the location, if it is in a connected area and turned on, and you can cause it to beep loudly, or display a message, or be erased.

[apple-iphone] How do you use Find my Phone?
[apple-iphone] Re: Selling to Gazelle: Do you really get the price quoted?
I've sold several items to Gazelle & have always been paid the price they quoted except for once when they actually paid me more after receiving an iMac. I like it because it's so simple to use & payment by check is quick.

Also, they're guaranteeing this price until Oct. 1, after the iPhone 5 comes out, when the 4S will be worth less.

Re: [apple-iphone] Newby
Yes. I have done this a couple of times and where I live, the speed is excellent. I am in New Zealand, but I gather that tethering is not allowed by US providers? Or you have to pay extra?

I'm new to this list so, of course, I have a question. Can the iPhone
be tethered to the laptop for internet access to the laptop?

2-year contract price. I have use Gazelle in the past but found out Best buy offers are usually better. The only problem is it comes on a Best Buy gift card.

Of course, you will need a good data plan.

Re: [apple-iphone] Selling to Gazelle: Do you really get the price quoted?
Alvin,
I have used gazelle in the past, and they will usually say that there is something wrong with your device once they have it. I sold them 2 different blackberries I had (both in brand new condition-still in the original boxes and all) and was quoted $300 for both. After they "inspected" each device I received an email that both machines were extremely scratched and not in new state (not true). They changed the offer to $225 or I pay for them to ship the devices back to me.
I don't recommend them, but I did receive the funds quickly which was nice.
Hope that helps
