I did a full reset and erase data. So far that has helped immensely and the touch screen input is much better but still quirky.
I am waiting to see if this partial cure is long lasting.
I have 3 iPhones, this 5, my primary 6+ and an inherited 7s. So if the 5 goes it is not devestating but I do use it daily.
The battery app disappeared after the reset.

Mine did similar things, and it turned out the battery was failing by
swelling up and pushing on other components. I took it to an Apple store
and they swapped mine for a new/refurbished iPhone 5 for the cost of the
battery ($69 or $79, can't remember which). I'd at least take it in and
let them look at it.
