You are likely to decide its fate, Bobby. If it should function acceptably (or better), then you could continue using it. Why not? As your main smartphone or as some back-up (or iPod or GPS logger).
However, mere functioning would not be the only factor in /my/ considerations. Me, I would also take into account the lack of updatability of ever more apps (as the hardware is 32-bit rather than current 64-bit, and the version of iOS reflects that) and the lack of support for 802.11ac wifi. Me, I have moved the SIM-card from my iPhone 6 to an iPhone XS, but I keep the 6 as a back-up device. That happens to be my style, but yours may well differ. (Upon swapping that SIM-card, I noticed that the screen of the 6 had come up, due to a faulty battery. I had the battery replaced (for EUR 50) despite just having the 6 downgraded to back-up. (I also have an iPhone 7 Plus with SIM, and some mirror image on Android: two in use and two SIM-less.)
I happen to use duo SIM-cards with all of my four subscriptions. It's a feature that T-Mobile offers here in the Netherlands, don't know about elsewhere. It means having twin SIM-cards, one of which can be active at a time.
That way, I can "easily" change (by toggling Airplane mode) between having a bigger device (iPhone 7 Plus) or a smaller one (iPhone 6, now XS). Or a better and a lesser one (as I now happen to have on Android).
An iPhone 5 might well constitute a good "smaller" or "lesser" device in such a pair.
Hope this helps. :-)

Sometimes it works fine. But increasingly this year it has become very squirrelly and will either not react to touching the screen or will over-react by scrolling up and down multiple times. Almost useless and unreliable at times.
I have done reboots and restarts and a reset of all settings and content The reset is in progress as I type this.
there are 16.6 GB available in the memory of 32 GB.
According to the Battery Life app my battery capacity is at 35%.
Is this the end? Can I do anything to save it?
Thanks,
Bobby
