If you are handy with small tools, you can change the battery yourself. Look at the iFixit instructions and see if it's something you could do.
You can get the battery for even less than iFixit's price but that is already quite reasonable.

Both my wife and I have iPhone 5 vintage phones. Both are starting to show shortened battery life and seeming to heat up. Are these fairly normal and typical for 'senior citizen' batteries?
