Use Media Monkey to manage your music. Its free and no more disappearing songs. I only activate iTunes to access the songs I bought from Apple. The tens of thousands I ripped from my CD's, albums, and tapes are all in a separate directory than iTunes library - and it can't touch them. I use Media Monkey to transfer them to my iWhatever, and AnyTrans to back up that device to an otherwise unused iPad for further backup. I am also backed up multiple times on external drives, a networked drive, and the cloud in case iTunes gets intrusive again.
Media Monkey also works for movies. Software to rip DVD's and BluRays is usually free, but it is a moving target as they keep an arms race to stop me from making copies of movies I purchased legally for my own use.
