[apple-iphone] iCloud Photos

Somehow my wife's iPhone wound up with Photos being turned on in iCloud. I think it happened when we upgraded from IOS 9 to IOS 10 a week or so ago. Some of her photos are now in iCloud, but I don't think all are. At any rate, we do not want to use iCloud for anything. I am afraid that if we turn off iCloud for Photos that she will lose the photos that got transferred to iCloud from her iPhone.

What I think might work to correct the situation is to sync her photos from her iPhone to Photos on her Macbook running El Capitan 10.11.6, then turn off Photos in iCloud, then re-sync back from Photos.

Is that a valid approach to getting back all her photos on her iPhone without iCloud?
