This is how I get audiobooks onto my devices:
I connect my device and open iTunes to show the device contents.
Then I find the location of the audiobooks MP3 files on my computer.
Then I drag the audiobook files onto my device contents in iTunes.
That's it! I have a 6 year old iMac.
