If you happen to own one, plug a 12-watt iPad power supply into a "Kill-a-watt" monitor, and see how "much" power it uses while plugged in and not in use.

After I did that, I decided to leave mine plugged in all the time.
On the other hand, I generate about 50% of my annual electric power.
