Yes, some things are strange, I had two happen yesterday upgrading my iPad Air to 7.1..1
Prior to upgrading, I connected to my Win 7 laptop, as battery was only 23%. The orientation would not change. Not a settings issue. Restarted, all good. After upgrading, the slide to unlock would not work. As if the slide was only a minor slide, not enough to unlock. Shut down and restarted, all fine.

You have found a common solution to many strange problems.
It would be really nice to find an explanation of exactly what *happens* when things like this go wrong, and exactly *why* this solution works, but ... well, at least it DOES often work.
