Your local ATT store is not the place to look -- the Apple Store is.
If I remember correctly, last year they started accepting orders days before the new model release. So that when "opening day" came along, there were 2 lines at the Apple Store -- the one winding 200 yards through the mall for walk-ins to buy a phone, and the short one for people who had already bought a phone and were there just to pick it up.
