if the AT&T hotspot plan is like the Verizon hotspot plan then yes, you can
turn it on/off as needed. both the data and cost are pro-rated but the data
consumed must balance against the time the feature is active. the VZW plan
is $20/2gb. i'm grandfathered with VZW for unlimited data but that does not
include the Mobile Broadband Connect (the official name for VZW's hotspot
feature). i've used the hotspot feature several times and it's worked out
very well.

Welcome to AT&T! Yes, they want you to pay another $20 to tether or hotspot.
Check, you may be able to turn it on and off as needed. It may even be
prorated for less than a month. I can't use it, because I'm grandfathered
into a so called unlimited plan.
