Hi Carol,
To make sure you'll send an iMessage not an SMS, you should turn off 'send as SMS' setting.

Why is it sometimes green and sometimes blue between 2 iPhones using iOS5?
It's annoying to get charged when I text my husband or other family members
who have iPhones.
