The "thingie" was a micro cell. ATT gives they away free in certain reception areas. You might see if Verizon has them, you might have to pay, but it might solve your problem.
Antennagate is a thing of the past. I've found iPhone 4 (and 4S) reception to be great. Of course that is ATT.
Before getting the micro cell, I had to use the soda can reflector trick in the house on occasion.
